General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) Impact on Life and Business Coaches

Over the next few weeks I will be posting some interesting and important details about the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which is expected to come into force around the middle of 2018 and I want coaches to be prepared well in advance. I don’t think there are many of the changes which will affect the micro coach business although there may be some which affect business coaches. There could be coaching opportunities for the business coach in the form of coaching companies and organisations in readiness for the GDPR.

I will be looking at some of the changes and how you can prepare yourself, your business and if you are a business coach, how to seize the opportunity. So for today I am simply looking at awareness. I am assuming that if you are a life coach or business coach you have already registered with the ICO (Information commissioner’s office). I know all the life and business coaches who trained with me on the Achievement Specialist’s Life coaching diploma will be aware of the requirements and will have registered within the first couple of weeks of attending the workshop part of the coaching diploma course as I discuss the importance of registering, the how to register and the cost. Fledgling life coaches are then encouraged to put a date in their calendars to do this. However, if you are reading this and did not train with me then there is a good chance you do not know about your responsibilities or you have forgotten about it, or your training provider did not encourage you to take action (a life coach creed – taking action).

Today’s Action: Make sure you have registered and if not, here is the link www.ico.org.uk/for-organisations/data-protection-reform/

Life Coach Gets Naked!

I am delighted to share with you a new book written by Maria Hocking who trained as a Life Coach with me many years ago and thankfully still keeps in touch and shares her successes.
Maria says:
“Strip Naked & Re-Dress With Happiness is a guide to surviving and thriving through personal challenge. The author, Maria Hocking shares a very strong message within the pages of this book, ‘Adversity doesn’t break you, it makes you’. Maria shares her own personal story alongside ‘changing room tips’, which are the steps that helped her re-dress with happiness when faced with adversity. An emotive, compassionate, creative and courageous story, with a raw honesty that every reader can connect with. You will want to return to the changing room time and time again!”

“I trained to be a life coach with the Curly nearly 12 years ago. The course opened up my mind and my life to a whole new amazing world. Since then, my career has only gone from strength to strength. The course proved to be a rock solid foundation for future training in associated fields. It has also had a huge and very positive impact on my family. We live how we want to live, do what we want to do and have never been happier. It was one of the best investments that I have ever made.”

I wish Maria huge success with her new book.

#Coaches Breaking the Law

Recently my husband bought a music mixing box from the website of a large UK company. The box did not perform as he was led to believe and so he decided to return it. Here is where it gets interesting, on their website T&C’s (and their employees) were quoting the old 7 day return legislation.

Coaches beware the law changed and came into force on 13th June 2014, whereby cancellation rights (distance and off-premises contracts) was extended to 14 calendar days. As a large proportion of #life-coaching is sold over the phone or via websites it is important for you to work within the law.

I explain this legislation (and other relevant legal requirements) during the workshop part of our level 7 #life #Coaching diploma #course and I realised that #coaches trained before that date may not be aware of the legal changes. If a large company is making this serious error, it is quite possible that some #life #coaches are doing the same.
Please make sure your terms and condition are up to date visit: http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2013/3134/contents/made

#Life-Coaching for Christmas and The New Year – Three Things Can Change Everything.

With Christmas only around the corner and the New Year right behind it, now is a great time to do some self #coaching. Look at the time in front of you and search for a specific moment over the next 10 day just for you. The time can be split over a few days or all together in one larger slot.
Find a quiet space where you will not be interrupted. If you are thinking wow that will be impossible, be #coaching creative. Will you be in the car on your own at any time? If yes, add a little extra time and pull into a car park as this will be fine. #LifeCoaching can be done anywhere especially when you are applying #coaching on yourself for yourself. You just need to find a time and a space for it.
I am assuming you have found the space and the time, here is what you do.
1. Reflect on the year just past and ask yourself, what went well, what could have been better?
2. Imagine you are now at the end of 2017 in the same place. Ask yourself ‘What one awesome thing did I achieve this year?’
3. Now plan how you are going to do this awesome thing. What, who and how can help you to achieve it?

#Life-coaching is a very powerful tool for change and it can be done by one of my expertly trained #life-coaches (who you could hire to ensure you achieve this awesome thing) or you can #lifecoach yourself. Make sure you take the arch with the awesome future not the arch of the brick wall to nowhere.

Whichever arch you take, I want to wish you huge #success, robust #health and infectious #happiness for 2017.

COLIN’S COLUMN

I am a man of many talents. One of these is the ability to recognise areas where I haven’t any talent. Like plastering for example.

So when a part of our apartment, located in a 200 year old house, needed some major cosmetic surgery, it was time to break open the piggy bank and get a professional in.

Our man kept to his appointment and did a great job at a fair price. Then he announced that he’d see us a week later to make sure it had all dried out alright and to give us a present.

He kept that appointment too and presented us with square white box containing a good quality china mug. It featured his logo of a flying plasterers’ trowel. His unexpected gift made us feel good even while promoting his brand and mugs are always handy anyway.

Of course coaches are all familiar with the beneficial effects of keeping journals in general and gratitude journals in particular. But these can be inward looking, so how about showing gratitude in a tangible form as our plasterer did? Read More

Spring and Life Coaching

Spring
I love spring as for me it represents all the aspects of Life Coaching at its best. Spring delivers sunshine and showers, the yin and yang of life. It is the sunshine combined with the showers which create the environment for new growth and because of all this new growth the animals start reproducing to maximise the opportunities of great abundance of food.

This has for me, huge resemblance to life coaching; Spring and Life Coaching are full of energy, opportunities and new growth. Most people are excited when Spring arrives as it brings with it new life in all its forms and I always feel the same excitement when I am coaching my clients. Usually when a client comes to me for coaching they are stuck and lacking in energy or direction. Just like being at the end of winter, the joys and excitement of Christmas and New Year are long gone and the days are still short, grey and cold.

Spring sunshine brings out the best in people, it invigorates, it warms, it lifts human spirits and provides the energy and impetus to take action. Life coaching does the same, it brings out the best in people, it energises clients, it lifts their spirits and confidence and it gives them the impetus to take action. It warms both he client’s and the coach’s hearts.

Cartesian Questions For Confusion

On my Life Coaching diploma level 7 course I demonstrate and the delegates practice many useful tools and techniques. These tools and techniques range from how to convert an inquiry into a paying client to how to use NLP when coaching. One of the easiest to use and most effective tools covered on the life coaching course, Cartesian Questions, can be used when a client is unsure or shows hesitancy in describing a goal or course of action.
When a client is confused or unsure of the next step, an average coach will run roughshod or skim over any doubts and go straight for actions. This is a natural response for non-trained coaches and sometimes

On 9th November 2015, the International Institute of Coaching and Mentoring (IIC&M) are launching the Global Mentoring week, in celebration of the leaders that bring ideas to life, and expand human potential.
During this week in November, the IIC&M will inspire mentors everywhere, through local national and international activities designed to educate, empower, collaborate and engage. We will be introducing a wider network to new possibilities and exciting opportunities.
This is the first of it’s kind, and one that we trust will grow from strength to strength in the coming years.
Are you a leader, a senior manager, then you too are a mentor. There are over 2500 categories we have identified where mentors play a part in sharing their expertise with their teams. We have mentors from Sporting, Education, Finance, Property and many more taking part in the week.
Are you already working with formal or informal mentor(s) or planning to do so? The IIC&M can help you with (accredited) mentor selection, mentor education and accreditation of your (informal) mentors. http://www.iicandm.org/

Let your client drive the bus!

Coaching Metaphor
Let your client drive the bus!

Remember that your client has all the resources they need within them and resist the temptation to give advice or directional contributions to the coaching session. Simply get on your clients bus and go along for the magical mystery tour letting your client do the driving and the coach becomes the passenger.

Passengers do not tell the driver how to drive, which route to take, how the bus functions, what to do in the event of an accident, they just watch interested in the scenery (behaviours) or asking the driver about the route (client background/goals/ideas) and which roads the driver could take to reach the destination (outcome). The passenger may mention a route they had heard about so the driver could have choices but the passenger does not drive and therefore the decision on the roads to take is down to the driver (client).

Sometimes the passenger points out things of interest along the way (successes/achievements) If the bus driver becomes lost you can look at the ordinance survey maps (Beliefs and Values elicitations) or the country map (goals) to decide which route would best get you both back on track towards the destination (outcome).

journey

In the middle of last year I was contacted by the directors of a new venture for coaches and asked if I would like to be involved. The company are Goaly.com and they are setting up a company to make coaching strategies from the top coaches available via videos, to anyone around the world. They were filming in London in September and wanted me to contribute some of my successful coaching strategies. I put together some ideas and after careful consideration we selected the most appropriate for the medium and the planned content of the website. David Vox, director interviewed me the morning of the filming just to get a feel for Read More
